The community is invited to the 45th Annual Blessing of the Fleet, on Sunday May 3, 2015, at 4:00pm.  It marks the opening of the menhaden fishing season on the Chesapeake Bay. Following an ancient tradition celebrated each spring all over the world, Reedville hosts its own ceremony for local watermen and all who enjoy and work on the water.

The parade of boats will start at 3:30pm and proceed up Cockrell’s Creek to the old Morris-Fisher factory tall stack property where the ceremony will begin at 4:00pm. Leading the parade are Captain Linwood Bowis on the Chesapeake Breeze, the Reedville Fishermen’s Museum’s deckboat the “Elva C,” and the Virginia Marine Resources Commission patrol boat.  Omega Protein will be represented by the F/V [to be announced].   The ceremony will begin at 4:00pm, on the grounds of the Omega Protein plant, 610 Menhaden Road, Reedville, Virginia.

Reedville is a town founded on the Menhaden Fishery, with ties to the community for all local watermen and pleasure boat owners.  All boats are invited for this annual blessing, to follow in the parade up Cockrell’s Creek, and to anchor off the property to view the ceremony.

Though organized and hosted by St. Mary’s Episcopal Church – Fleeton, this truly becomes a community event for the fishermen to begin a new fishing season, with local ministers participating, a combined choir, and inviting a guest speaker.

The keynote speaker this year is Mr. Bret D. Scholtes, President and Chief Executive Officer for Omega Protein, traveling from the corporate office in Houston, Texas.

Come stay at Fleeton Fields Bed & Breakfast and join this community event on May 3, 2015 at 4:00 p.m., help to bless this 165 year old industry for fair weather, safe fishing, and a good catch.

Come early or bring a lawn chair as there is limited seating provided.
